Management and Development for Health (MDH) is transitioning from being a Harvard University project to a fully-registered Tanzanian NGO that can carry on the work started by Harvard. To qualify for US Government (USG) funding, MDH requested Khulisa Management Services (Pty) Ltd to audit its organisational and programmatic systems to identify where improvements were needed. Three Khulisa staff conducted assessments at MDH head office and selected health facilities where MDH/Harvard provided HIV and AIDS support. Within a few days, Khulisa made significant findings and provided feedback to MDH on areas requiring strengthening – most of which could be addressed by tightening systems and processes at the MDH head office. Khulisa provided follow-on technical assistance to the MDH Head Office to strengthen the identified gaps.
The audit report, along with workshops and meetings, were shared with various MDH unit managers to determine how they could better integrate their internal procedures, use inputs from different units for decision making, use data quality reports for quality improvement, and finally develop standard operating procedures.
Approximately six weeks after Khulisa’s work with MDH, the organisation underwent an external USG audit conducted by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA findings revealed no new weaknesses that had not already been identified by Khulisa and being attended to by MDH and concluded that MDH systems were stronger than they were before Khulisa arrived
