BRIDGE is a non-profit organization in South Africa that drives collaboration among stakeholders in education to increase their collective impact on the system. BRIDGE convenes a number of communities of practice (CoPs) in several key focus areas in education, including a CoP in Monitoring and Evaluation. Khulisa is an active participant in the BRIDGE M&E CoP and will be helping to facilitate the CoP event at SAMEA 2022 next week.

During 2022, BRIDGE National M&E CoP participants (M&E professionals as well as program implementers) have been exploring the many roles of data in educational planning and implementation. The journey has been made up of progressive steps, with mini masterclasses held on working through the stages of gathering, cleaning, analyzing, visualizing, and communicating data for different purposes.

For the third community of practice event of the year, the M&E CoP’s thematic focus on data will be integrated into the SAMEA Biennial conference. As a logical next step in the CoP’s own data journey, the focus will be on “what next” for data – how does data become useful in real-world applications, and what needs to be done for data to contribute to meaningful change? To this end, the CoP is titled “Actioning educational data: Have data, what next?”

The CoP event at SAMEA will be structured around several inputs, which provide practical examples of the role of data-driven evidence in effective educational interventions. Topics discussed will include:

·         Data collection and use for the 2021 ECD Census;

·         Data-led learning for adaptive evaluation processes: Lessons from an early grade reading evaluation in South Africa;

·         Data skills for the 21st century;

·         Facilitated learning dialogue; and

·         Sharing of resources.
